Fresh Water Survey

Ecological Surveys of Silverthorne Lane and the Feeder Canal
Rachael and Jonathan worked with ecologists Heather Rumble, Caroline Nash, and Fredric Windsor to conduct ecological surveys of the area with local participants. The ecological surveys provided the Artists with an in-depth view of the area’s ecology whilst fostering relationships with local community groups. The surveys have influenced the final designs for the commission in that they shed light on the public’s awareness to the area’s ecology as well as offer insightful information about the area from a range of perspectives.

Fresh Water Survey
A fresh water survey determines the health of the freshwater ecosystem using various indicators like the presence of specific plant and animal species, water quality parameters, and habitat features. We surveyed a section of the Feeder Canal with Dr. Fred Windsor and residents from the local community. The survey gave us greater insight to the array of wildlife present in the canal which was surprisingly rich according to Fred.

The Feeder Canal is brackish water with a salt content between freshwater and seawater, typically ranging from 0.5 to 30 parts per thousand (ppt). It occurs naturally where freshwater sources like rivers mix with saltwater from oceans or seas, such as in estuaries.
